 Calendula - This Herb is a cheery favorite of mine.  It self-seeds itself regularly, and decorates my Herb Garden lavishly.  In India it was used to decorate Temple Altars.  The Persians & Greeks used it as a food garnish, mostly in soups and stews, while in Europe, it was used to color Butter & Cheese. Because Calendula is an excellent skin healer, doctors on the battlefield of the American Civil War used the leaves to treat open wounds...

  Growing - Calendula likes a full sun position, and will tolerate most soils, but doesn't like wet conditions.  It will self-seed easily throughout the year, though it is recommended to 'Deadhead' the spent flowers for continuous growth.

  Uses - We use Calendula petals frequently in all Salads, Drinks, Cakes & Cookies (see Vegetarian Cooking Page for a free recipe!)  It can also be used in Rice, Soups, Cheeses, Pate, Yogurt & Butter - give it a go!

As Calendula is a highly soothing & healing Herb, I use it mostly in a Herbal Cream, for Cuts, Wounds, Stings & Bites - Basically any Healing... It can also be used for: Leg Ulcers, Varicose Veins, Bed Sores, Bruises, Inflammations & Chilblains. Use Calendula Oil for Cracked Nipples from breastfeeding (non-harmful for baby), it is healing and rejuvenating.

  Recipe - Herbal Cream (For approx 1 normal 'hand cream' Jar)  In a double water boiler, put 1 Tablespoon of Lanolin. When melted, add 1/2 cup of pure Almond/Olive Oil. When combined, add 1/8 cup of Beeswax, melt thoroughly.  When melted & mixed, add enough chopped Calendula Leaves & Petals to top the cream mixture.  Take off heat and leave to sit overnight.  The next day, place over double boiler again, and melt gently.  Pour into prepared jar, and leave to harden.  Use as a cream for all wounds!

  Options - For External Use Only - Use Chickweed (see the Chickweed page), Lavender, Comfrey, Hypericum, Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, & healing Essential Oils such as Tea Tree in the cream.  Fresh Herbs are added along with the Calendula, Essential Oils when melting for the second time - make sure it doesn't boil.

Calendula & St John's Wort Soothing Oil - (This recipe can be used to heal and condition sun burnt skin - but  try to avoid overexposure to the sun in the first place.)  Calendula heals & soothes the skin, while St John's Wort acts by calming stimulated nerve tissue, & is often used in after-sun skin-care products.

  Recipe - Healing Oil - 5ml/1tsp Calendula Oil, 5ml/1tspn St John's Wort Oil, 2 drops Lavender Essential Oil.  Mix the ingredients together and store in a dark glass bottle for up to six months.
