 Chickweed - This common 'weed' of gardens grows profusely nearly all year round, leaving a small gap in mid-winter when it 'rests'.   Chickweed has been used as a culinary Herb since the Middle Ages; Paracelsus in 1530 described it as "The elixir of Life... one of the supreme healers".

Growing - Chickweed grows in most fields or gardens, sometimes to such an extent that it is considered a real pest. If kept under control, and harvested regularly, it is manageable.  Once established, it will self-seed & propagate readily.

Uses - Chickweed is very nutritious, containing vitamins: A, B1, B2, B12, C & D. Minerals: Iron, Copper, Silica, & some Manganese, Phosphorus, & Zinc. Chickweed aids the absorption of nutrients in the body, & is associated with Anemia & Weight Loss.   Also good for Digestive Problems, & is especially good for Gastric Ulcers, Colitis & Constipation.  We use it as a regular Salad Herb, being chopped up finely, so my younger sisters & brother can't discover it!  (see our Vegetarian Cooking Page for free recipes!)  Also, add it to Sandwiches eaten raw in salads or try it steamed/boiled as a vegetable....  a wonderfully healthy alternative.

Chickweed is an excellent Herb to use as an external ointment for Inflammations, Infections, Cuts, Bruises, Stings, Bites, Wounds, Ulcers & especially for any Itching or Irritations.  Very Healing for the skin, so keep it in mind for Eczema or Psoriasis.   Recipe - Herbal Infusion - Best eaten Fresh in Salads, or Sandwiches.  OR, juice it with carrots & apples for a powerful brew!  Make a strong Infusion with the fresh Herb, using a  handful of Chickweed to 1 cup of boiling water.  Leave to infuse, then pour into the bath water to ease Itching.  Soak a flannel in the Infusion & apply it to the affected area.  You can also drink 5-20 mL's of Chickweed Infusion per day - that goes for your animals also!  Make a Herbal Healing Cream (see Calendula) with Chickweed, (or use a Herbal Combination) or crush & squeeze the Fresh plant onto the skin to ease Bites, Stings & Itching.
