This is how we created our Organic Gardens!
After buying our Farm 'Kailash', we discovered one of our best assets
~ we had
wonderful loamy soil... which still needed building up, but was a great building
block.
We planned the position of the Vegetable Gardens in our best flat/sloping, sunny
positions, (we have 4 large Organic Gardens) we searched for our best resources
- something you'll read about a lot; you'll use them a lot.
We
found that we had our own compost, lawn clippings, and tree
cuttings, which we
mulched. From neighboring Farms, we discovered a natural source of Horse Stable Manure & Straw, and also, composted Hay.
Brilliant resources! We also
have two of our own horses & several chickens, so we happily utilize their 'by-products'...
J
Firstly, we used the tractor hoe to break up the soil (sometimes
it's best to use the machinery also!), then mixed in good quantities of our own
Compost & the Horse Straw. As both of these were mostly broken down
already, we were ready to start planting... and what brilliant crops!
After planting our first Vegetable Seedlings (from a reputable
Organic Grower), we watered the plants & Mulched on top of the soil, using Hay, Straw
or Compost, thereby maintaining soil moisture, & greatly enhancing plant
growth & ultimate soil health.

easily as well!
When a crop comes out of the soil, make sure to re-plant with
a different type of Vegetable - called Crop Rotation...
For instance, optimally, you should not plant Potatoes
in the same soil more than once in every 2-3 years! A lot of nutrients are
leached out, and need to be replaced before planting again. Legumes should
not be planted twice in a row either - instead, plant Brassica for example.....
After using the healthy soil for some time, leave that
area to 'fallow' - or to rest for some time. This allows for increased worm
activity, an increase in nutrients, & lighter, richer soil ~ the Earth needs
to catch Her breath sometimes also!
When a crop comes out, mix in more Compost, leave to rest,
& when the time comes to re-plant the Vegetable of your choice, the Soil is
beautifully rich & light... the crops we are now getting are
phenomenal! So healthy, full of goodness, delicious, & best of all; are
Chemical Free!
You can also experiment with Companion
Planting as a fun method of beautifying your Organic Garden, providing
Herbs for your salads & meals, attracting beneficial insects, & keeping
pests away. See our Correct
Companions Guide
page for an extensive list of which Plants like each other!
If you find that you're over-run with Garden Pests, & dislike
using any Chemical Sprays, give natural Organic Sprays
a try. You will find a list of different types of Organic Sprays we find useful.
Remember that Nature, in Her perfect
pattern, allows some plants to be kept aside for the diet of insects... so do
the same; don't worry too much about the insects & plant a few extra plants around the
outer edge of your Organic Garden, to keep all the insects happy & full ~
then they stay away from the best part, which you get!
And it's that simple! You can experiment with different
methods of Organic Gardening, like Raised Beds, & Worm Farms, or you can use
Crystals ~ all work, have fun finding the best for you! J
